Friday Lunch Date

Nick and I walked out of the house on time today, but with no lunches in tow.

We had no leftovers to spare and not much to make a good sandwich.

We both agreed on a place for lunch before we even talked about it! As soon as he mentioned this place, I agreed because I was already thinking about it, too.

This place may not look like much from the outside, but it’s worth your time to visit.

This is our favorite local bakery – Our Daily Bread – and the one I talk about so much when we stop by for lunch time treats like cookies, scones, and French pastries.

On top of their selection of desserts and freshly baked breads, they also offer hot breakfast and lunch options every day that they’re open during the week. They normally have a few “hot” options for lunches and a variety of cold sandwiches and salads, as well.

Plus, the lunch and soup specials change each day, so you always have great choices.

I caved and got the same thing I had for lunch on Tuesday.

Hummus, lettuce and tomato on their fresh baked tomato focaccia bread. It’s just so good, and has a super thick layer of hummus.

My hot lunch date :) got a beef popover, finished my other sandwich (don’t ask), and had a chocolate chip scone with his meal.

Dessert for me?

IMG_7710

A lemon macaroon.

I love lunch dates! It’s a nice break in the workday.

Do have a favorite local spot to eat?

Cinnamon Crisis

Nooooo!

We were out of cinnamon this morning! But, we also have to leave a little early (Nick has a meeting this morning), and he offered to make us oatmeal while I was drying my hair.

IMG_1220

I made it work, but oatmeal is NOT the same without cinnamon!

IMG_1221

  • 1/2 cup oats, 1 cup water, pinch salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon-sugar mix
  • 1 apple, diced
  • 1.5 Tbsp crunchy pb
  • 1 Tbsp graham cracker crumbs

Baked Apple Mess Oatmeal was born!

The cinnamon-sugar mix was okay, but I don’t normally add any sweeteners. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t like a usual bowl.

Oh well – at least it was still a good way to start the day.

Maggie says Happy Friday!

What’s one spice / herb you can’t live without?

Opposites = Balance

Thanks for all the notes, guys! I’ve loved seeing every comment come in today, and I have tons of new books to read! Plus, some of the comments reminded me of books I have read that I loved, so now I want to read them again.

This afternoon was pretty good. Maggie actually behaved for the most part – we played for a bit after lunch, but then she snuggled down beside me again and let me work for the rest of the afternoon while she napped. Nick played pretty hard with her last night, and I think it just wore her out completely.

At 5, I put Maggie in her kennel with her first half of dinner while I did a 20 minute detox flow from yogadownload.com  – it was perfect for today! Lots of deep twists and pigeons :) My hips have been really sore lately from sitting on the floor, indian style, so much to play with Maggie and all the poses today felt great.

Dinner was supposed to be leftovers, but once Nick suggested  the New River Grille, I was in :)

…and since I had so many veggies at lunch, I figured I could balance it out with my favorite burger + onion rings tonight :)

burger

Salads are the complete opposite of a burger/fried onions, right? The perfect balance for today! At least this food is local!

Now I’m in my pajamas on the couch and Nick and Maggie are playing on the floor right beside me.

Life is good.

nite!

S’mores and Salads

To celebrate my one year anniversary of the blog, I made some S’mores for breakfast!

IMG_1203

  • 1/2 cup oats, 1 cup water, pinch salt
  • 1/2 banana, sliced
  • cinnamon – the last of it!!!
  • 1 Tbsp dark chocolate peanut butter
  • 1 Tbsp fluff
  • 1 Tbsp graham cracker crumbs

IMG_1204

Definitely the best way to start today :)

Maggie thinks so, too!

She has not been the best puppy today…no big problems, but she’s not sleeping as much as she did a few weeks ago which makes it hard for me to sit and get work done.

I’ve taken her out about 8 times already, and a few times were just because she wanted to play, not go to the bathroom. Oh, the life of a puppy! If I could just stay home and play with her, I would – I’m sad that work gets in the way :)

She’s actually passed out at my feet right now. About 20 minutes ago, she was going crazy again, just running circles as fast as she could, grabbing toys and them throwing them down again, and I guess she wore herself out pretty fast. I wish I had a video camera so I could catch the craziness in action!

For lunch, I just couldn’t stop thinking about this salad that I had the other day!

  • romaine
  • corn
  • carrots
  • avocado
  • red onion
  • black bean burger
  • salsa
  • salty corn chips

IMG_1143

I just had to recreate it for lunch. Those black bean burgers just call to me from the freezer!

I’m going to finish eating and take her on a walk around the neighborhood during my lunch break. Let’s hope that burns off a little energy ;)

What’s your  favorite freezer meal / item? Veggie burgers, pizzas, burritos? I need to find some good things like that to keep stocked for easy meals.

I love to put jam on a toasted piece of bread with a salty cheese. The contrast is incredible and makes a great breakfast!

Congrats Ladies! Send me your addresses so you can get your jam!
