About
Hi, and welcome to BranAppetit!
I’m Brandi, the cook behind the blog. I’m a list-making, caffeine-fueled worrywart and chocoholic trying to find her way around the kitchen. My husband and I live in a small town in the mountains of southwest Virginia with our fat cat Roxy and crazy pup Maggie.
If you couldn’t tell, we love to cook. But we mostly like to eat.
After getting married, I decided I should learn how to cook. Or at least be able to make something other than a grilled cheese and toaster strudels.
It was a good idea – I have fun in the kitchen, our jeans are gradually getting tighter, and we’re still going strong, 7 years later.
While I don’t have any formal training, I’d like to think that I’m a pretty good home cook. Sure, I still burn things and make messes and have complete failures in the kitchen, but those moments are what keep me going. Most of my cooking knowledge comes from family and cookbooks, but the most valuable is just trial and error.
We try to keep things somewhat healthy around here. But that doesn’t mean that we don’t eat pancakes or biscuits or cookies or cake – I just try to put a healthier spin on most of the recipes coming out of our kitchen.
I started this blog in January 2009 as a way to share food ideas and recipes with my family and it has grown in ways I never imagined. I’ve cooked pumpkin stuffed French toast for hundreds of foodies, met a former White House Chef, and am now writing my own food column in a regional women’s magazine. And it’s all thanks to you.
Thank you for reading and for joining in the fun – I’m looking forward to sharing more of our life with you!

Hi! Thanks for sharing your story. I can totally relate to you on the running thing. I started running for the first time ever a year and a half ago. I’ve lost a lot of weight, and I think it was smart to wait for the running until I had a bit less to carry around on my joints. I had no idea how liberating it would be! Good for you and thanks for sharing your story!
Hey Brandi, I hope you are having a great day. You are doing an amazing job with this. You are a great writer, and a wonderful cook. I look forward to reading this everyday.
Love, Mom
Hi Brandi,
Awesome blog! Do you mind if I add it to my blogroll? Thanks!
-Foodie
Just found your blog through Weight Watchers community – it’s so inspirational! I’m trying to begin a running program this summer while losing – my son is running crosscountry in the fall and could use a running buddy (and is still young enough at 12 to be okay with me!).
Love your food ideas with all the “real food” – hope to visit often. Thanks!!!
Great blog! Just found it (joined WW online) – love the menus and recipes – real food:)! You’re very inspiring as I am starting a running program this summer so my 12 y/o will have a “running buddy” for XC training.
Hope to visit often – thanks!!
Hi and thanks Mary! You’ll do awesome – it’s so good to have a running buddy!
Brandi, your story sounds so similar to my own. I’m so glad I found your blog, it’s nice to follow along with people who made changes to lose weight initially but continue with making healthy choices in many aspects of their life for overall health and wellness! 2008 was a life changing year for me too.
Thanks so much for the note, Alison!
Your story is so great! AND it is encouraging to know that you have kept your weight off and grown an even healthier attitude about food and fitness.
WAY TO GO! I love your blog!
Thanks Madison!!! Ditto!
I just found your blog and I love your inspirational story! College seems to be a turning point for most, and since I just graduated and am living back home I find it a daily struggle now to maintain! I also loved how you are into running now and use that as motivator to stay heathy! Im putting you on the blogroll! GREAT STORY!
Thanks so much for the note and for stopping by!

I love your story. I am currently back on the WW plan for the 3rd time and for some reason this time feels different.
I just discovered your blog and absolutely love your story! I am currently in the process of trying to understand food so that I can eat for my health and not just my weight loss.
Knowing that you hit a point where things felt more natural is very inspiring because sometimes the light at the end of the tunnel fades and it is reassuring to hear that it does in fact exist.
Love your story!! I can so relate!!
I’ve lost weight with WW in the past too. And your PUPPY is so cute!!!!!!! Such a sweet face!!
Love your blog title! Just found you through Healthy Living Blogs- great posts
I am unquestionably bookmarking this blog and sharing it with my friend, thank you nice blog
Hi Brandi – I came across your blog through Heather’s post of your cookie stuffed blondie recipe..and I am so glad I did! Love every part of the blog!
Thank you so much!!
Wow, I was checking Facebook and happened upon some pictures that led me to this website. Brandi, I had no idea!! I love to cook, too, and am currently compiling a family cookbook. For the past several years, I’ve been grinding wheat and baking bread. I also try to substitute honey for sugar whenever I can. Seems like we have something in common. I like to cook healthy, but am unwilling to sacrifice taste for “health”. So the trial and error begins. I’m so excited to dig into your blogging for new recipes!! Maybe we’ll actually get to catch up in person soon. Tell Nick “hi”.
HI Alison! I’m so glad you found me
Please tell the family we said hi – we miss you guys.
What a lovely blog you have here.! fresh and vibrant. Tells me a huge deal about the person behind the blog. I am glad I stumbled across your blog. Following you on twitter now.
Hi! I just found your blog & love your approach to food and living a healthy lifestyle! I can’t wait to read more of your great ideas!
Hi Brandi,
Its so great to read your recipes, I can’t wait to try them out! I just moved to Virginia Beach to expand a catering company, Oh La La Events and More, and give it a healthy twist. Part of the company is comfort food, the other half is fresh, light, and natural. I love that you and your husband began your culinary journey together and got healthy together. Congrats!
Love your blog! Have some reading (and cooking) to do.
Just saw you on Dr oz and think this is awesome!! I’m wondering since I have to eat gluten free and I’m trying to loose weight and the only thing that worked for me was the G.I. DIET do you have any ideas on how I can combine the two? Or do can you recommend the best recipies for loosing weight? I just look at water and I gain
please help lol
Just saw you on Dr. Oz and I am so excited. I have gluten intolerance. I am trying your risotto TONIGHT! I hate to cook and I love the idea of quick, easy, and g-free meals, snacks and desserts. Thank you!
Thank you so much! I love making that oat risotto – especially with steel cut oats on the stovetop, too. Just make sure you use a big bowl while the oats cook!
I just watched your segment on Dr. Oz and can’t wait to try all your recipes! They look delicious. Thank you for having the courage to tell your story, it’s inspiring.
Thank you so much!
how healthy are your recipes, they look great but you dont say anything about how much calories or fat or anything at the end of the recipes. This is very important for my husband when i do a meal, is there a way i could find out?
Hi Brigitte – I don’t have the program or software to run the recipes for the nutritional information, which is why that information isn’t posted. I think there are places online you can run them, but I don’t want to use those since I’m not sure how accurate they are.
Saw you on Dr. Oz and loved the recipes. I am so glad to find your website. Great job.
It is a valid email?
Is what a valid email? I don’t have one posted here, except for the contact form that comes directly to me. Thanks!
Hi Brandi! Just saw you on the Dr. Oz show and I loved your “quick” and healthy recipe ideas. I really don’t like cooking but your recipes look very easy. I would like to keep both my husband and I healthy too. . I look forward to trying some of your easy recipes. Thank you!
Thanks so much for stopping by! I hope you find some recipes that you both like – I know it can be a challenge to make healthy, tasty foods that everyone enjoys.
Hi Brandi – I just watched you on Dr Oz today and can’t wait to try your recipes. I’m trying to do gluten free and I’m curious if all of your recipes are gluten free?
Thanks,
Cheryl
Hi Cheryl! Thanks so much for stopping by! No, not all my recipes are GF. I do try to mark them when they are, but some of my older ones definitely aren’t marked. I have a good mix of gluten free and regular recipes here, but if you have any specific questions about them, just leave a comment or send me an email – I’d be happy to answer your questions!
I just watched you on the Dr. Oz show and was very impressed. Came right to your web site to check it out and love it! I come from a long line of cooks, half Italian and half French, so my love of cooking and good food just comes naturally. I can’t wait to try some of your simple and healthy recipes. Thanks!!
Thank you so much, Georgette! I bet you know some great recipes. Thanks for stopping by!

I’m so happy to hear about you today from the Dr. Oz show! My husband recently found out he must live a gluten free life and I have been paralyzed for 2 months not knowing what to cook. So, I haven’t cooked a thing. He went from a junk food junkie to a health nut overnight and it was hard to take. I’m ready to start cooking and I wrote down the 3 recipes from today’s show then typed them out and will go to the store tomorrow. Thank you!
Patti Ryan
I’m so glad to have some recipes for you guys to try! It’s definitely hard making a big change with our food, but there’s still So many things you can eat!
Hi Mrs. Brandi,
I saw you on Dr. Oz today 9/27/12 really loved your quick recipes can’t wait to try them i will be following your blog looking forward to checking out more recipes
Hi Brandi! I saw you on Dr. Oz. Just wondering, how is replacing, risotto with oats gluten free? Gluten is found in wheat, oats and barley. A response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
oats are naturally gluten free, although some are processed in facilities that handle gluten, so there are certified GF oats, too. I know regular risotto is GF (it’s just rice) – this was just a twist on risotto that takes less time to cook than a normal risotto. You could definitely still make regular risotto and just use these flavors!
Hey Brandi,
I tell everyone I know to watch the Dr. Oz show and that is because of guest like yourself, and he is pretty cool too! my wife loves to cook and your blog is now one of her new cook books, thank you for sharing,
Jim Kyser.
Thank you so much, Jim – I really appreciate it!
Did not see the whole show and was wondering if all your recipes gluten-free?
Hi Meredith – thanks so much for the note! No, not all my recipes are GF. I do make a mix of recipes – some GF, some not.
Saw you on Dr. Oz today and was wondering if you have a cookbook available?Very impressed with your recipes. Can’t wait to try them.
Nope, no cookbook yet – just the recipes on the blog here. thanks for stopping by!
I was fortunate to have seen the Sept. 27, 2012 of Dr. Oz. where Brandi made some of her recipes. To say that I was thrilled, is a hollow word.
You see, I went to see my primary care physician on Monday (25th) and left her office feeling so worthless and useless. I honest to God felt like my so called existence was over. I must give up all diet pop sugar, dairy products and gluten.
I have no ide where in the heck to start. I am half German and love to eat and ware every single calorie that goes into my mouth. I have severe arthritis, depression and stress. I am obese and menopausal. So one can see, I honestly feel that I have one foot in the grave. I need to make changes and help myself, or else I will not see my next birthday in June when I turn 58. To say I am scared does not even come close. I am terrifed and so desperate. I need help!! I look in the mirror and honestly do not know the person looking back at me.
If anyone else is going through anything I would love to hear of their struggles and happiness.
If there is a newletter, I would be honored to ask that my name be added to it, As I said I need help, and support, from those who are in a similar position as I am.
Gail, I’ve been in bad places and the first recommendation is get in a good church. Watch Joel Osteen on Sunday. Get his book. God is amazing. Get moving by walking first. Walk, even if it’s 3 houses down the road and back. You can do it! Do that daily for a week, or 2 weeks. Then increase it to 4 houses. Do it even if it’s snowing!
I’m not obese, but need to lose 25 lbs. It’s very hard because…yeah, I love to eat and my entire life is teaching, homework, eating out with friends and family. Like everyone else. I challenge you to walk, starting tomorrow morning. Or evening, whatever. Get into a support group. Hang out with healthy people, or people who are also trying to be healthier! LIKE ME! Best of luck, You can do it!
I just saw you on Dr. Oz and I was so impressed with the food you made and with your story. It gave me a lot of inspiration. Thank you so much.
Hi…I am wondering why you put baking powder in the Strawberry Microwave Breakfast.Bowl?
And there is a viewer that made a comment on The Dr. Oz website that mentioned that the oats may not be gluten free. I called the Quaker company and the representative said that although the ingredients state there is no gluten, it may have been stored near wheat products, resulting in trace amounts of gluten.
Thanks in advance for your answer.
Hi Marianne! The baking powder just helps the cake rise and gives it that cakey texture, which is what you want! And you’re right – oats themselves are gluten free, but some are processed in facilities that may have traces of gluten. There are certified GF oats available – I know Bob’s Red Mill makes some that are great and usually easy to find. Thanks so much!
Brandi,
JUST loved your recepies featured on the Doctor Oz Show… I have to say I’m excited to try them! Thanks for posting them… do you happen to have all of them in a book?
Hi Denise! Thank you so much for stopping by! I don’t have a book right now – just the blog! Maybe some day?
Hey Brandi.
I am a GF blogger myself and I just seen your segment on Dr. Oz. I immediately thought to myself OMG there is a GF blogger I never heard about!
. I can see now you are not exclusively GF but HEY thats OK. Your ideas that are GF are BRILLIANT!!!…. I look forward to digging though your recipe box!
Hi Lisa – thanks so much! Yup, not exclusively GF, but I have cut way back in the last year. It’s fun to play around with recipes!
Hello Brandi -
I rushed home from work to view the Dr. Oz show after a co-worker had just mentioned what the show was about. I have been experiencing multiple health issues from skin rashes and swelling, dry skin, hair loss, memory loss & fog, along with the GI symptoms for nearly 2 years and have seen a doctor from every specialty known to medicine and been told by my primary care physician that my last ditch request to see an allergist was a waste of time and that ‘it’s all in my head’ and to go back on my antidepressant. I am so grateful that I persisted with my gut feeling that something is wrong despite the ‘thousands of dollars wasted in tests’ as my primary care md put it. Perhaps if the medical community were to get up to speed this would not be the case.
Sorry to ramble, but I just wanted to express how much I appreciate your sharing of recipes, especially those that are so simple to prepare. I have known about my multiple food allergies (wheat, soy, chocolate, banana, apple) for over a month now, but have not had the time to develop a meal plan or shopping list because it has seemed so overwhelming of a task. I don’t want to have to prepare two different meals at meal time (for my husband and I). One is a challenge when it actually occurs. Often it is take out and there certainly is no gluten-free in my area – even the healthier fast foods.
So thank you again and please include my email in any future newsletter, etc.
Great job on the Dr. Oz show! Good luck with the blog and your future endeavors.
Hi Jennifer – thank you so much for the note! I hope you figure out what works best for you. I think that’s the most important thing, and it can be hard to figure out what works and what doesn’t! Not all my recipes are gluten free, but I have been cutting back over the last year since I feel better when I don’t have a ton of it.
I am allergic to wheat….I just found this out at age 50, the damage is done…..I now have cut all gluten out of my diet and each day I feel a little better. I have purchased many Red Mill products, but always just skipped over the oats, because I did not know they were gluten free! Thank you for bringing this to my attention, breakfast is going to be VERY different from now on!
Yes, bob’s makes certified GF oats, and they’re great!
BRANDI SAW YOU ON DR. OZ SHOW ARE ALL YOUR RECIPES
GLUTEN FREE ? I THINK MY DAUGHTER MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO EAT GLUTEN SO I THOUGHT I WOOD TRY YOUR RECIPES.
Hi Georgia! Thank you so much for stopping by! My blog is not totally gluten free – I do a mix of gluten free recipes and non-gluten free recipes. I hope you’ll find some that you like!

Hi Brandi,
Thank you so much for sharing your story & healthy easy to make recipes!! I can’t wait to make the no bake cheesecake cups for my daughter’s birthday next week. She’ll be 11 & we generally rely on my husband to help cook/bake etc due to my not being able to constantly get things in/out of oven because of my back issues. Anyway, thank you very much for sharing the recipes and your story on the Dr. Oz show. I can’t wait to surprise the family with dinner this week
I hope you guys like the cheesecake cups! They’re one of our favorite quick treats
Hi there,
I just watched you on Dr. Oz
Are all you recipies Gluten free was just wondering.
Thank you for your dedication to blogging.
Hi Michelle – thank you so much for the note! Not all of my recipes are gluten free – I do a mix of GF and non-GF on the blog.
Just saw you on Dr. Oz! I am so excited to start following your blog and trying your recipes!
Thanks Kimberly! I appreciate it
I saw you on Dr OZ and was so interested to find your blog which I found. Are all your recipes gluted free? I need to start a gluten free diet and you gave me the start that I needed. How do I get started with this? I have never been on a blog before. Can you guide me on how to get started. Is all your recipes free or is there a cost to this? How do I find the recipes and do they say gluten free on the ones that I need to try? Thank you so much for what you are doing.
Hi Ann – thank you so much for stopping by! Not all my recipes are gluten free – I do a mix of food at home, so some are gluten free and some are non-gluten free. To check out the blog, just go to the home page here on this site and read through the recipes! You can also search if you’re looking for something specific, too. Thanks again!
Just saw you on Dr. Oz and can’t wait to check out your recipes. Thanks for doing what you do!
Thank you so much, Ellie!
Hello Brandi
I saw you on Dr. Oz today and loved all you recipes! Are all of your recipes Gluten free? Thanks J
Hi Jessica! Thanks so much for the note! No, they’re not all gluten free- I do a mix of GF and non-GF recipes here.
Hi. Just saw you on Dr. Oz so I wanted to look your site up. Those little yogurt chesecakes with the dark chocolate crusts sounds YUM!!!!
In your intro above, you say “our jeans are gradually getting tighter.” Don’t you mean your jeans are gradually getting LOOSER?? ;o) I heard you say you used to be bigger some yrs ago so I just assumed you meant you’ve been losing weight. Anyway, can’t wait to try some of your recipes. ;o)
Ha, yes
I just mean that we’re eating well, now that I’ve actually learned how to cook! Thanks so much for stopping by!
Hi Brandi – I just saw your show on Dr. Oz and I will be checking you out for sure. I have a gluten sensitivity and your creativity with healthier choices sounds wonderful! Best of luck and thank you for sharing! Jennifer
Saw you on Dr. Oz and can’t wait to try some of your no-bake recipes! I am an utter failure in the kitchen but your recipes look very approachable– and yummy!
Thank you so much! I used to be a mess in the kitchen, too
I am similar to you, a list maker, home cook that can always improve on a recipe
, work full time, take care of my Mom, and slightly neurotic! Sorry, no pets, that would just send me over the top. I saw you on Dr. Oz and thought you were terrific! Dr. Oz does not give you credit for your recipes on his site so it took me a few tries to find you. I will follow your site, and enjoy your new recipes to come. Thanks for sharing!
thank you so much for the note and for finding me!
OMG, THE BEST DESSERT EVER!!! After seeing you on Oz, I immediately went out and bought cream cheese, dark chocolate and Greek yogurt..had to try it! WOW!!!! HOW DELICIOUS!!!! Kind of like a healthy Dove ice cream bar! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much, Brooke! I’m so glad you liked them
Do you have the time conversions for your recipes so that I am able to cook them in the oven. I do not cook food in the microwave and as they all look and sound so delicious I am anxious to start eating them. I have recently found out that I am very gluten sensitive.
thanks…
Hi Cathy! For some microwave recipes, I do (the breakfast cakes can be baked at 350 for 20-25 minutes), but I don’t always put them in the post. If you have any specific questions, just let me know!
Enjoyed another dish chickpea salad had mild sausages and crossant s with it as
Well. Was a hit. I enjoy your dishes because they cater to people
Like me who is not good in the kitchen your dishes are simple and
Easy
Hi Brandi,
I just stumbled upon your blog while searching for recipes on pinterest. I just moved to Southwest Virginia myself from Maryland and I agree it’s completely different from anything I’ve experienced at home. I feel like we live in the same town, its very remote around here! I am realizing as well that I need to start really thinking about cooking, canning, etc. I look forward to reading more of your blog and trying out some recipes, especially the pimento cheese (something I had never heard of before but I LOVE)! Thanks!
Hi Rachel – I’m so glad you found me! i hope you find some recipes you like
Where in Virginia are you?
I just moved to Grundy in the being of September. My boyfriend is in law school here and thought I’d tag along. At first it was bit of a culture shock. In Maryland I lived in a pretty rural part area but we were about an hour drive from Annapolis, and hour and half from Washington DC/Baltimore. So I’m used to being able to go get what I need or want on a whim, where here I have to plan a lot more because a trip to go shopping could take up the whole day. However, everyone I’ve met in this area is as nice as could be and I wouldn’t trade that for anything. I’m sure we share a similar experience!
Cool! It’s definitely different here, but I love it
I wanted to thank you..thank you for this website..from one Brandy to another (minus the i ) I love to eat and cook. I cook healthy meals for my family but sometimes struggle for variety (lets face it also healthy that taste good). I made your farm house bread yeterday and it came out perfect, making me look like a pro. I had not made bread for ages since the last time I tried well let us just say it was the last time. Thank you again and bravo1
oh, this makes me so happy
We LOVE that bread! It really is easy.
Hey Brandi, i saw you on Dr, Oz & was watching your no bake, minutes to make, gluten free recipes, but i cannot find them,, Where do i go to find those recipes ?
Hi Sheryl! Thanks so much for stopping by! The recipes that were on the show are linked at the bottom of this post: http://www.branappetit.com/2012/09/27/raspberry-cheesecake-yogurt-cups/
I am so glad I came across your blog. Your blog posts are so interesting and reader friendly. I love your food philosophy
looking forward to read more of it
Congratulations on your blog, have wonderful recipes, too bad you use the Microwave so much. Food nutrients are lost with the use of the microwave.
Thank you for sharing your recipes.
HI Hedda – thank you so much for the note! I don’t use the microwave that often, but they asked for no bake recipes on the show, which is why those used the microwave.
Dr. Oz’s show had you on for gluten free meals, and they are not. Was there a mistake in the introduction?
Hi Janice, thanks so much for the note! The recipes he highlighted on the show were gluten free, but my blog isn’t exclusively gluten free. I do a mix of recipes.
hi,
I would just like to say that this website/blog is amazing. I love that so many of these recipies are quick and easy but also healthy! i am constantly looking at your blog and trying out different recipes. Trying different and new recipies brings excitement to what I am eating everyday. My one and only suggestion would be to maybe add how many calories each recipie is. It would help myself and perhaps others to manage their daily calorie intake as well as realize how healthy your recipies really are and by looking at the low number of calories on each recipie would put a smile on everybody’s faces.
thank you !
I just discovered your blog and I’m really excited about it. I’m going to make your Chicken, Artichoke and Mushroom Casserole tonight for my family. Keep the good stuff coming.
Hi there,
Just watched Dr Oz (Sep 2012) and saw you talking about your gluten free receipts. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to trying them.
Brandi,
You are such an inspiration. I just forwarded your web to a friend, telling her that you make me want to try your recipes by simply readig your wonderful expressions of life’s experience. So looking forward to using Bran Appetit often. Thanks!
Thank you so much, Peggy!
