White Bean and Garlic Hummus

Can we take a minute to talk about the crazies you see in airports?

I’ve had two insane things happen in the airport just in the past month and I need you guys to tell me that these things are normal. They are normal, right? It’s natural for people to go a little batty when they’re traveling?

Crazy #1 was in Phoenix a few weeks ago. Susan and I were already a little delirious after being up all day and we were waiting for the red-eye from Phoenix to Charlotte. Our flight was leaving at 11 pm, so we headed to the gate a little after 10 that night.

While we were walking, we passed by a guy that was spread out on the floor, wearing scrubs, socks (but not shoes) and he was just twirling his hand around, staring at it. Weird, right?

We kept walking and found seats at our gate to wait until they call our sections to board.

Lucky (?) for us, creepy dude in the scrubs ends up boarding our flight in the section before us.

We see him get in line just a few feet from us and notice that 1) he has no luggage, 2) he is still not wearing shoes (just socks), and 3) he is carrying a clear tupperware-type container and there are some fake (I hope) brains, organs, and a human face in the container.

And it gets better.

As we were getting on the place, the flight attendant was on the phone with someone talking about face-in-a-box dude! She said that some other people were asking about him and told whoever she was talking to that they could investigate if they wanted.

We kept on walking, and I ended up having to go back a few rows to find a spot for my carryon bag. He was sitting, perched in his seat like a little kid – shoeless feet in the seat – just staring at the row of people.

I found a spot for my bag and hightailed it back to my seat and just hoped I would fall asleep before he tried to show his fake brains or face to anyone during the flight. Thankfully, he didn’t try to have show and tell on the flight and we got home safely.

But it was weird and it creeped me out a little bit. I mean, who carries a fake face and brains in a clear box onto a plane, in scrubs, with NO shoes on, and no other luggage?

I know this has nothing to do with this hummus…but I just had to share. Have you ever seen anything this crazy? Maybe it was a full moon. Maybe he was doing it as a joke? Or maybe he was hungry. I get a little crazy in airports when there isn’t any good food around.

But…back to the hummus. Ever since we got our food processor, I haven’t stopped making batches and batches of the stuff. It’s just so easy! With this batch, I wanted it even creamier so I used a mix of chickpeas and white beans, and a lot of garlic, just because. It’s a good idea.

White Bean and Garlic Hummus

Makes: about 2 cups hummus

  • 1 and 1/2 cups cooked white beans, drained and rinsed (if canned)
  • 2 cups chickpeas, drained and rinsed (if canned)
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp salt

Directions:

  1. Pour the white beans and chickpeas into the bowl of a food processor.
  2. Add the olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, and salt and turn the food processor on a medium-high speed until the hummus is beginning to look smooth and creamy. If you want it even smoother, drizzle in some more olive oil until it has the consistency you want.
  3. Store in the fridge or serve immediately.

  1. Mmm, my favorite TJ’s hummus flavor right there! Yours obviously looks much better. ;)

  2. Creeeeepy!!! Dude, my plane flights aren’t usually quite that eventful. :)

This hummus looks fantastic too! Love the combo! :)

  3. HaHa…I am a Flight Attendant, I could tell you stories you would not believe!!! I think I would have called the Agent Supervisor and left him in Phoenix!! Trying the humus tomorrow!

  4. That is really creepy…next time I get on a plane I’m going to be looking for face in a box dude & I really hope he isn’t on my flight. Love the white beans in this; yum!

  5. Oh gosh! I’m hoping that he really worked in the healthcare and had to deliver these items, but was afraid to fly so he took a xanax. I mean, that’s the only acceptable reason, right?
Wow. My only crazy airport story is that someone tried to mug me. I fought back and won. I’m pretty much super woman ;)

  6. Wow, that is such a crazy story! Happy to hear he behaved well on the flight after initially creeping everyone out. I’ve gotten into a bad habit of buying hummus, and need to get back to making it. This recipe looks like the perfect place to start!

  7. That is creepy! I am a chicken on planes so that would make me even more freaked out. Great hummus!

  8. Mmm great recipe! I loooove me some hummus!

  11. This looks delicious! I really cannot get enough of hummus – could eat it everyday! I bet the addition of white beans makes it extra creamy, too!

  12. Haha I thought you were going to somehow make the connection between the fake brains and hummus… Glad you didn’t ;) I’m a huge fan of TJ’s hummus but never have made my own. Perfect recipe to start putting some of our wedding gifts to use!

  13. Haha! I love how I glanced at the pictures and was so amazed at the recipe that I didn’t see the airport stories until I read other’s comments and was very confused. First, the recipe looks AMAZING and I cannot wait to try it.

And wow, brains and a fake human face sitting in the fetal/child position with no shoes? I think I would like to think they did some extra security checks on him!

  14. We would use it when making our weekly batch of vegan 100% whole wheat and vegan mustard rye breads!
