Sour cream and onion flavors are full of good memories for me.
Whenever my sisters and I were at my Nany’s house growing up, we would almost always have the same snack options.
1. Bugles, which means we had to put them on the ends of our fingers and pretend to be witches before eating them – obviously. It’s the rule, I think.
2. Grilled cheese sandwiches made in her grilled cheese press machine. This thing sealed the edges of the sandwich – have you seen one? It was kind of crazy. It crushed the crusty edges and completely sealed it so the cheese stayed inside the sandwich. The only bad thing about making them this way is that you didn’t get the greasy, buttery outside of the bread from cooking it in the pan.
3. Sour cream and onion popcorn. My favorite.
I don’t remember what brand made the sour cream and onion popcorn, but I miss it. It came in a long triangle box, with the kernels and seasonings already in the package. After waiting for it it to finish popping, we would cut the bag open, dump it into a bowl, and chow down while we watched cartoons with Nany and curled her hair.
That sour cream and onion popcorn was perfect. Salty, sour, crunchy.
And then…they stopped making it. So it was back to bugles.
But now that I’ve figured out a good spice mix, you can pretty much bet that a popcorn recipe is coming soon.
Before trying it on popcorn, I wanted something even easier. Chip dip it is!
Side note: It’s officially college football season. Sorry in advance if that’s all I talk about for the next 5 months, but I. love. it.
Right now, I’m sitting on my couch, in my VT shirt, watching the game and trying to get this together as fast as I can so I get back to my chips and dip and yelling at the tv. Yay fall!
Since we’re still swimming in tomatoes AND now my weekends are full of football-watching, meals and snacks are going to be fast and easy. Just like this dip. I love having quick (and healthy) snack options for game days, and this dip turned out even better than I imagined.
Thick and tangy greek yogurt is the perfect base for any dip where you would normally use sour cream – and the mix of sour buttermilk and sweet onion powder gives you the same flavors you would have in a full fat, creamy chip dip, but it’s almost completely fat free!
With this dip, I don’t feel bad about sitting on the couch all day Saturday. And you shouldn’t either.
Sour Cream and Onion Chip Dip
Makes: about 1 and 1/4 cups dip
- 12 oz. fat free plain greek yogurt
- 1/2 Tbsp buttermilk powder or 1 Tbsp buttermilk
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp dill
- Scoop greek yogurt into a bowl.
- Add the buttermilk powder, onion powder, salt, and dill to the yogurt and stir to combine.
- Spoon the dip into a clean bowl and chill in the fridge for 5-10 minutes before serving or longer, if you can wait. The flavor gets better the longer the dip sits.
- Serve with chips or veggies.
