Dirt Pudding

Let’s make and eat some dirt!

Don’t be scared.

And don’t tell me you didn’t used to eat weird stuff when you were a kid. I know you did.

I know for a fact that my parents have a picture of me, sitting on the beach with my chubby chipmunk cheeks full of sand and another shovelful in my hand. Eating beach sand? That’s probably one of the most disgusting things ever.

But kids will be kids. I didn’t think it was gross when I was 2 years old. I was just happy to be sitting near the water and have hot sand to snack on. Ew.

Once I got through the sand-eating days, I moved on to better things. Like dirt. My mom’s dirt pudding – not real dirt….although I’m sure that happened at some point, too.

My mom always made hers even better: she would layer the creamy pudding and crushed cookies in a big flower pot, stick in some gummy worms and a fake flower and it totally looked like a potted plant. The most delicious potted plant ever.

I didn’t have a flower pot to use this weekend, but I had to make this anyway. It’s one of the easiest desserts – ever – and it’s one of my all time favorites. If there was a year that I didn’t ask for a cookie cake for my birthday, it’s because I asked for a huge bowl of dirt pudding instead.

29 years of life and I had never made dirt pudding on my own? What is wrong with me? This was a long time coming.

And yes, yes, yes be ready for some pudding recipes soon. I. am. so. excited.

Mom’s Dirt Pudding

Makes: 10-12 servings

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups prepared vanilla pudding (either from a box or homemade)
  • 2 cups prepared chocolate pudding (ditto)
  • 1 package chocolate sandwich cookies, crushed
  • 1 small bag gummy worms

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl/dish/flower pot OR in single serving dishes, start layering the puddings with the crushed cookies. Vanilla –> cookie crumbs –> chocolate –> vanilla –> cookie crumbs.
  2. Add a few gummy worms to each cookie crumb layer, covering up with the pudding.
  3. Continue to layer until you have used all the pudding and cookie crumbs.
  4. Let the dirt pudding sit in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to chill before serving.

  8. My husband asks for Dirt Cake pretty much every year for his birthday. These are such a cute version – and much more reasonable portion size than splitting a whole pie pan between two people! :)

    • yeah…more reasonable, until you eat more than one jar. then it kinda defeats the purpose.
