Nutella Swirled Bread

Have you baked any bread lately?

If the answer is no, I’m giving you some homework this weekend.

All you need is flour, yeast, water, salt, oil, and some honey or agave.

Hardly any hands-on time. Just let the dough work its magic, then throw it in the oven.

Your house will smell incredible. Your belly will be happy. You’ll have bread, right out of the oven, plus – maybe – some extra for a sandwich or toast with breakfast.

Make it plain. Make it sweet with cinnamon or pumpkin or savory with feta or rosemary.

I don’t care what you mix in – let’s make bread!

I’m working on having a pretty epic brunch dish this weekend using my regular farmhouse bread recipe and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.

It may end up being my favorite way to use our bread – but we’ll see if it beats this loaf.

I really love the rosemary loaves I’ve made, but there is something about Nutella.

This bread is layered with thick smears of the rich and nutty chocolate spread before being rolled up and baked. It melts into the dough, but keeps the dark ribbons in the loaves.

The best way to serve it is definitely to toast a thick slice and then smear it with more Nutella. I don’t think you can ever have too much.

Nutella Swirled Bread

Makes: 2 loaves, 12-16 slices each (based on my basic Farmhouse Bread recipe)

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups bread flour
  • 1/3 cup honey or agave nectar
  • 1/4 cup canola or safflower oil
  • 1 Tbsp salt
  • 4 1/2 tsp active dry yeast (2 packages)
  • 2 1/4 cups warm water
  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2-2/3 cup Nutella, warmed for 15-20 seconds in the microwave

Directions:

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer or other large bowl, mix the bread flour, honey/agave, oil, salt, and yeast.
  2. Add warm water to flour mixture and mix together until the water is incorporated.
  3. Stir in the all purpose flour, 1 cup at a time, until the dough is mixed together and is easy to handle.
  4. Knead dough (with dough hook or by hand) until it is smooth and springs back when you touch it (about 5 minutes).
  5. Place the dough in a large bowl that has been coated with olive oil. Cover with plastic wrap or a towel and sit in a warm place to rise for 40-60 minutes or until dough has doubled.
  6. Punch dough down and divide into 2 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rectangle (the width of your loaf pans).
  7. Spread the nutella onto each rectangle of dough. Roll up and place into your greased loaf pans.
  8. Cover the loaf pans with plastic wrap or a towel and let the dough rise, again, in a warm place 40-60 minutes, or until doubled.
  9. Preheat oven to 375 degrees and place rack in the middle of the oven.
  10. Bake bread for 40-45 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and they sound hollow when tapped.
  11. Remove from the oven and let them cool 5 minutes before removing from the pans.

  18. You have all these bread recipes…does the bread flour have gluten?

    • Hi Barbara – yes, this bread (and all my breads) have gluten. They are not GF! My recipes on the show were gluten free, and I do cook gluten free quite a bit, but my blog is not exclusively gluten free. I do a mix of recipes.
