Reading Now: My Top 10

I tend to go through phases with reading. Either I’m completely smitten and cannot get enough (like right now) or I’m not reading anything more than cookbooks and magazines.

Fall and winter seem to be the time that I really get back into reading books again. When I get home from work and it’s already dark, it’s hard for me to want to do anything else after making dinner, cleaning up, and packing my lunch.

And right now, I’m in the middle of a total reading addiction. I’m reading new books, pulling out some of my old favorites, and still looking for more.

The last books I’ve read were:

The Help

and

the entire Twilight saga, which I read, start to finish, in 5 days. Needless to say, the house was NOT cleaned this weekend because I was paralyzed on the couch with my books.

I don’t think I’ve ever done my top 10 on here, and I thought it would be fun to see how many of you have read these books AND which ones you would have on your Top 10 list!

My all-time (so far) Top 10 Books , ones that I’ve read more than once and read pretty regularly, are:

Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers

I Am One of You Forever by Fred Chappell

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver

– not a novel, but The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway is incredible

The Awakening by Kate Chopin

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Master of the Game by Sidney Sheldon

So, what’s your top 10?

Any books you’ve read lately I should add to my list? I need new suggestions!

  1. We read alot of the same books! Love LOVE Francine Rivers- Voice in the Wind is my favourite book by her, and in my top 10 :)

    • I haven’t read that one! I have read a few others (The Atonement Child was great, too). I’ll have to get Voice in the Wind soon.

  2. I’m right there with you with Their Eyes Were Watching God & Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. I also love My Sister’s Keeper and Cider House Rules.

  3. Man, I really need to get into reading again, but it is just so hard to find the time! I think maybe when I’m finally done with school I will be able to read again for leisure. All I’m reading these days are journal articles about psychology, which yes are interesting, but they are not fun!

  4. Brooke told me you got bit by the Twilight bug. I guess you liked them then? I read them all back when Breaking Dawn (the book) came out. Brooke and I were job searching and I had nothing better to do. I thought they got better with each book, peaking at Eclipse, and then falling dramatically with Breaking Dawn. That last book was a real stinker–way too many convenient conclusions to miscellaneous plot threads. I can’t hate on the books though because they got Brooke reading. She’s a mega Twilight fanatic, and it cracks me up to see her nerd out about something like I do with tech and gadgets (you should have seen her when we were in Volterra last year).

As for book recommendations, the stuff I read is all over the place, but here are some of my favs:

Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore

The Life of Pi by Yann Martel

The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

Soon, I Will Be Invincible by Austin Grossman

    • Thanks Austin!

Yup, I was totally bitten by the bug and read all 4 books in a total 4.5 days. I kind of thought the same thing – Breaking Dawn wasn’t my favorite of them, but I was surprised at the ending because I was thinking it would be different.

Nick thinks I’m nuts after seeing how fast I read through the series, so I think I’ll have to watch the movies by myself :)

  5. Giiiirl, I read the Twilight series in a few days too. I might start it all over again today. WHAT?
    Bout to start Bossy Pants!

  6. I went and saw Breaking Dawn last night. Not bad. But I read the books in January on a bender like you did.
I’ve just started The Hunger Games (bought it last night after seeing the movie preview) – I’ll share when done as it’s gonna be one of those books.
A couple of years ago I did a 52 books in 52 weeks series (don’t have that kind of time anymore!) But, a few of my faves were: A Thousand Splendid Suns (that one is tough to start, but impossible to put down, and emotionally draining. LOVE it.)
Water for Elephants, Catch Me if You Can (way better than the movie), Something Borrowed, Something Blue, and baby Proof were all really good.

    • aw man, I was wondering if you had seen it yet or read the books! I’m sure Nick won’t go with me to see the movie :)

We have The Hunger Games, so I’ll probably start that soon, but we only have the first one.

I haven’t read Baby Proof, but I read the other two – good!

  7. I’m in between Drive by James Sallis and The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides. I should also be reading Middlesex by Eugenides since I know someone’s going to hold it at the library…

  8. i love pride & prejudice too! :) i’ve read it SO MANY TIMES!

i also just read the help and loved it. i’m going to check out some of your other favorites!

some of my favorites are the tudor books by philippa gregory. yes, the other boleyn girl, but also the constant princess, the queen’s fool, the virgin queen, and others. they all hooked me & kept me wanting more.

  9. Oh, I read the Awakening! A good book!

I’m definitely a fan of Devil in the White City, The Cemetery Girl, any Jodi Picoult or Phillipa Gregory book and The Lovely Bones!

  10. I’ve never read the Twilight series or seen the movies but maybe it’s time I give one a shot just to see what the fuss was about! The best book I’ve read so far this year was One Day which they turned into a movie that was good, but the book was phenomenal!

  11. Jane Eyre and The Awakening arebookd that I think aboutv on a regular basis. I love them. I really enjoyed The Help too. Slaughterhouse Five is another of my all time favorites.

  12. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is my all-time favorite book–please read it, I’m convinced everyone who does will love it! :)

Other ones I’ve liked recently: The Glass Castle, The 19th Wife, The Paris Wife, Secret Daughter

I plan to start The Hunger Games series soon!

  13. If you like Hemingway, read A Moveable Feast and then watch Midnight in Paris when it comes out on DVD later this month!!!
Also, with the classics you mentioned, I think you might like to read Thomas Hardy. My favorite is Far From the Madding Crowd, but Tess of the D’urbervilles is probably one of his most famous novels.
I just finished Steve Job’s biography and loved it.
