Recipe Round-Up: Apples

Apples are back! Are you as excited as I am?

I will confess this: I am already missing fresh berries and peaches. But I love clearing out the fruit drawer in September and getting ready for crisp and crunchy local apples once fall hits. Plus, this is one time of year that makes me finally get rid of the random lemons and limes hanging out in the fridge and stray berries that got left behind.

Even though there are tons of different apples that grow in our area, Nick and I have never gone apple picking. Maybe we need to do that this fall. And get some pumpkins. And actually carve them this year. And maybe just hang out and eat all our Halloween candy by ourselves with our jack-o-lanterns since I’m not sure we’ll have any trick-or-treaters at our new house.

This is why I like writing and having you guys around. You help me sort through all the random thoughts in my head and actually decide on plans! Halloween will be fun at our house: pumpkins, lots of candy, no costumes, and maybe some apples. Who’s coming over?

Where was I?

Besides eating apples plain and in oatmeal, I haven’t had many this year, but I have big plans!

I can’t wait to get baking with piles of apples again. The smells of apples and cinnamon and butter are almost better than the smell of chocolate. Apple pie baking does not equal brownies baking, but it sure does come close.

If you’re a little scared of pie dough (like I am some days), you should try these Apple Pie Bars. They were everything good about apple pie without being an actual pie. No crust to roll out, no lattice top. Just lots of apples and butter and crumbly topping.

And if quick breads are your thing, please please make this Maple Apple Walnut Bread. It takes a lot for me to like a quick bread (mostly because I mess them up the majority of the time) and this is the best quick bread I’ve ever made. PS: Make sure to save a couple of slices and make some french toast with it one morning. You won’t be sorry.

Because I know it’s officially apple season here, it’s now all I can think about.

Here’s one list I have going of apple recipes I want to try:

Apple Fritter Cakes with Warm Caramel Sauce from Lauren’s Latest

Apple Cheddar Palmiers from A Spicy Perspective

Turkey, Brie, and Apple Panini from The Novice Chef

Apple and Pear Slaw with Caramel Cider Vinaigrette from Food + Words

Jicama, Orange, and Tart Apple Salad from She’s Becoming Doughmesstic

Apple Crumb Bars from Mele Cotte

Apple Risotto with Toasted Pecans from How Sweet It Is

Baked Apples from Bell’Alimento

Apple Cinnamon Bread from Two Peas and Their Pod

Goat Cheese and Apple Tart from A Cozy Kitchen

Apple Cranberry Baked French Toast from The Sweets Life

It’s a great side dish – kinda sweet, kinda cheesy, but mostly just delicious. I am shocked though that you’ve never been apple picking or had apple cider donuts. You should remedy that ASAP. Though if you are going to go apple picking, I would go asap. At least in my area they only had a few varieties they were still picking. (Though I was still insane and walked away with almost a bushel.)

    • 1. I need to make that.

      2. I know. I need to go apple picking and have apple cider donuts. It’s sad that I haven’t done either.
