a figgy favor

After weeks of having 2, maybe 3, figs ripen at a time, we are now being hit with them.

I walked over to the fig bushes the other night after work, searched through the bigger one and didn’t find any.

But then. Then I hit the jackpot on the smaller fig bush.

Sixteen ripe figs, waiting on the porch to be turned into something delicious or eaten as is.

If I get enough in the next few weeks, I might make some jam. I will definitely be roasting some to have with greek yogurt and sticky, syrupy local honey.

But that’s where my ideas end right now.

We made pizza. We’ve eaten them plain.

But I want to know – what are your favorite ways to use fresh figs? New recipes you’ve seen lately and want to try?

  3. I honestly have never used figs in my cooking/baking. A homemade fig newton would be fun!!

    • I think so, too :) I’ll have to see if I end up and have enough at one time to make some newtons!

  4. You should try making a fig galette. I’ve seen them all over Foodgawker and they are really making me wish I had access to fresh figs! :-?

  5. You are SO lucky…we have fresh figs at the store and the produce guys will often offer one or two up for me. I indulge and love them but haven’t bought any to experiment with in the kitchen. I had the best fig + bleu cheese pie a few weeks ago…as I’m sitting here staring at a very large day-old baguette and wondering what the heck to do with it…perhaps a figgy (bread) pudding?

  6. I like basil, fig and ricotta flatbreads – carmelized onions are an added bonus!

  7. I like them cut in half, sprinkled with sugar and sauteed in a little butter for just a few minutes. They get crispy amazing! You can dip them in some mascarpone sweetened with some vanilla and sugar as well. So yummy! Also can go wrong with them wrapped in bacon and grilled. :D

  9. Make fig newtons! ahhh soo good. I don’t have a recipe, but those cookies rock. Or put them in sandwiches with pbutter and honey….one of my faves :)

  10. I’ve never had fresh figs before! I’m still kind of new to the flavor but it’s definitely growing on me… especially when combined with cheese!

  11. I have no ideas for you as I’ve never used fresh figs, but once again had to tell you that I’m jealous. I putting a fig bush on our garden of our dreams list.
