I can’t take credit for this recipe.
But I can say that the two recipes I used to make Nick’s birthday cake are some of the best I’ve ever had.
Since I’m a basket case when it comes to making layer cakes, I knew better than to try to make my own recipe. I freak out when I’m trying to level off the layers and ice the cake without making a crumbly mess all over the kitchen (which happens no matter what). Add to that the fact that one of these cakes was overflowing in the oven…I’m glad I chose tried and true recipes!
I looked online and found a cake and frosting recipe from two people I knew I could count on.
The cake itself is smartly called “The Best Birthday Cake” from Smitten Kitchen. I wanted a good old classic yellow cake recipe, and this was delicious! Buttery, light, and lots of vanilla flavor – just what I was looking for.
The frosting is one I saw Kelly post with her Cornmeal Cake on Evil Shenanigans a little while ago, and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Her Chocolate Buttermilk frosting was the perfect match with the buttermilk-laced cake.
Have a birthday coming up? Make this.
Just want an excuse to make and eat a cake? Make this.
Either way, it’s a good idea.
What’s your favorite kind of cake?

Looks like you did a fabulous job with your cake! I really should try that recipe for my husband who loves yellow cake with chocolate frosting!
I totally have a love/hate relationship with making layer cakes. They stress me out to no end, but when the finished product looks good, you can’t help but feel like a million bucks! This cake looks absolutely fabulous and you can’t go wrong with that classic yellow cake/chocolate frosting combo!
Me too! I love seeing them when they’re done, but man – they drive me nuts :)
This could easily become my favorite cake!
So perfect. I am not normally a cake fan, but i have a feeling i would love this
I love a good, simple cake recipe :) thanks yo!! one of my fav cakes is either my Chocolate Chip butter cake or the Apple Spice Cake. Check em out!! sooo delish! http://lauren-whatlaurenlikes.blogspot.com/2011/06/apple-spice-cake-with-brown-sugar.html
Mmmm…that cake looks fabulous, Brandi! I’m a sucker for a good ol’ yellow cake, but my favorite is probably Carrot Cake with lots of cream cheese frosting.
Happy Birthday to Nick!
oh man, that sounds awesome! looks great too :) frosting can hide alot of things, i’ve learned! plus, as long as it tastes good…
I love white/vanilla cake with chocolate frosting. Or red velvet. Or carrot cake. Or Italian cream. :)
Awesome cake!
Well it looks fantastic to me. I’d never know layers cakes make you nervous. ;)
Thanks :) I’m seriously a spastic mess when I’m putting them together!
your caked turned out great—i bet nick was so pleased! :)
my fave cake is italian cream cake–it has coconut and pecans and a cream cheese frosting!
I love making layer cakes and have made them for close friend’s birthdays for several years. I love the challenge. Yours looks great and I’m sure it tasted even better!
Thanks Sarah!

The cake looks so tasty – is there anything nicer than chocolate icing?
Glad you had a lovely weekend :)
