weirdest snack. what’s yours?

Here’s a fun fact:

One of my favorite snacks when I was growing up was…lettuce.

Lettuce. Iceberg lettuce.

By itself. Well, sometimes with ranch dressing, but usually just plain lettuce.

I remember sitting on the floor in our den with a bowl full of iceberg lettuce leaves and nothing else, snacking on them like a little bunny instead of a 9 year old girl.

And yes, I did have friends. But I don’t think I ever had my afternoon lettuce snacks when they were over to visit. That’s a special kind of weird that you only share with your family.

I am happy to say that my vegetable intake has grown since then and that I eat more than plain iceberg lettuce.

One of my favorite things about the warm weather is that I can bring back my mixing bowl salads!

Whenever I’m putting together a salad for a meal, I raid the fridge for anything and everything that might work.

Monday’s lunch bowl?

Romaine. Red onion. Local chives. Local carrots. Local eggs, hard boiled. Drizzled with a homemade dressing made of olive oil, balsamic, dijon, salt, pepper, and a spoonful of strawberry jam.

So spill it – what’s the weirdest thing you like to snack on? I can’t wait to see if someone can top mine ; )

  1. That’s so cute! I can see you sitting there with your bowl of lettuce… :)

Unfortunately, my snacks are pretty boring… But when I was pregnant I would eat vanilla ice cream with pickles…

  2. I used to love black olives. I would put them on the ends of each finger and pretend I was an alien, and then eat them off one by one.

    • that reminds me of another one! Sometimes, I would have my grandma give me a whole can of whole black olives for a snack. She’d pour them in a bowl and I’d eat the entire thing.

  3. Oh my goodness…I never thought I’d find another lettuce companion! Seriously, I JUST wrote a ‘filler’ post in my “Signs I’m not Normal” series about me often saying, “I’m having a lettuce craving” and immediately going to buy a head of Romaine.

    So weird…

  4. I love that you snacked on lettuce as a kid! My weird snack is probably just the fact that I’ll put salsa on ANYTHING and everything.

    • me too! This is really weird, and I’m not sure why we did this, but my little sister and I used to eat Matzo crackers dipped in salsa.

  5. Weird snacks? Hmmm that would probably be ketchup sandwiches, banana sandwiches or chip butties, us british are a weird lot :)

  6. My best friend in high school loved to snack on red cabbage and raw potatoes. I thought she was soooo weird. But then again, I used to eat tomatoes with salt all the time as a kid!

  7. I don’t know that I have any particularly ‘weird’ snacks. Growing up, we used to have bananas in orange juice for breakfast, which was possibly odd and my grandfather made peanut butter sandwiches with miracle whip. Also, I am sometimes guilty of eating hummus with a spoon when I get a craving and I do love the sweet and savory combo of cantaloupe w/ cottage cheese.

  8. Haha, I love that you used to eat plain lettuce as a kid! Thanks for sharing, it’s made for a fun post :-)

I wish I had a weird snack of my own to share but I can’t think of anything. I do find myself occasionally scooping peanut butter out of the jar, putting chocolate chips on the pb, and then liking the spoon clean. Yum!

  9. Hm, I think my weirdest snack when I was a kid was eating spoonfulls of mom’s freshly made, still warm jam.
I really don’t remember my snacks when I was small :))

  10. The blog looks SO GREAT. Glad to be back. I’ve missed reading your blog.

  11. That is awesome, I wish my kids would eat that as a snack!!!

I used to eat pickles like crazy every day after school, I couldn’t get enough!

  12. mmm that salad makes me want to cook up some hard boiled eggs :) I love carrots and yellow mustard….I eat it almost every day :)

  13. am i weird, for not liking any odd food pairings?!
Although i used to like dipping my mcdonalds fries in a hot fudge sundae but its been way to many years since i’ve done that. my dad would make us when we were young peanut butter on toast with bacon.
now i just crave sugar ;( and caffeine :(

  14. During gardening season, one of my favorite snacks was the core of a cabbage head. Weird, I know, but my grandmother would always laugh at me because her and my dad would be prepping sauerkraut and they would give me the core of it and I’d just sit there and chew on it like a rabbit. :) Don’t worry, everyone’s weird :)

  15. favorite snack would have to be Doritos and cottage cheese. Everyone thinks it is odd until they try it. SOOO yummy! but I don’t indulge too often!

  16. I like to snack on buttered saltines. I can also go for them plain. I can definitely kill an entire sleeve of saltines in a single sitting!

    • i totally forgot about that – I used to do that, too! buttered saltines at my grandma’s house was the best :)

  17. I love pickles dipped in ketchup!

  18. Ha! That’s too funny.
One of my favorite snacks as a kid was ice cubes. Seriously!! I loved them especially at a certain friends house (she had the best cubes!) LOL

  19. OK so I have a few… First, dill pickle spears wrapped in deli cheddar cheese – haven’t done that one since high school but I remember it being really good! Another one from my high school years, fast food french fries dipped in chocolate milkshakes. Gross, but so tasty. Obviously I had a very nutritious childhood. And the weirdest one of all… my dad is a pastor and when i was very young, my sister and I would sneak into the sacristy of the church and pilfer communion wafers. Not bread, wafers. The cardboard-like circular things. We loved them!

  20. What a fun post! I a trying to think of my weirdest snack and there are probably so many I am at a loss to think!

  21. Ok, so I never thought it was weird, but apparantly others do. Raw potatoes. And sometimes I would slice cheddar cheese and melt that on top of the sliced potatoe in the microwave. It was pretty tasty. Oh & I just remembered this one too, if we had tuna fish, I would put in the middle of a slice of cheese and roll it up and eat it. Guess we just come from a family of “weird”, yet really good (at least to us) snacks :0]

    • yeah, I remember the potatoes :) I had some other strange ones, too, I’m sure! Like white rice with melted shredded cheddar on top.

  22. Come to think of it….I never really had any extremely weird snacks. Darn, I’m boring! :-P

  23. I used to like bowls of cornflakes with mini marshmallows in them……..with no milk.

    • :) My little sister used to eat all the marshmallows out of the boxes of Lucky Charms – it drove us crazy! When we went to pour a bowl, all that was left was the cereal pieces. No fun without marshmallows :)

  24. hahaha! I cannot imagine a little girl snacking on ice berg lettuce. I wish I would have snacked that healthy! Instead I was eating disgusting processed foods heated up in the microwave.

That salad looks so tasty and refreshing right now!

  25. I used to love frozen peas. (Is that a little kid thing?) I used them to cook tonight, and munched on a few while getting dinner ready.

  26. Ew, I used to eat huge chunks of cheddar cheese on white bread and microwave them until the cheese got all gloppy. I like the lettuce idea a lot better!
