Honestly, this first post about our garden is not impressive at all. Mostly because we’ve been busy with traveling and have been hit hard with big storms and countless rainy days, causing us to get a bit behind in our planting.
Even so, our blueberry and raspberry bushes are planted, and, thanks to all the rain we’ve had lately, you can see a bit of green on a few plants already.
We just got a belt for the tiller that we needed so we can get our raised beds built for the strawberries and asparagus. Even without being in the ground, our strawberry plants look so happy!
They’re doing great so far, but it’ll be good to get them planted in the beds soon.
Same for the asparagus – they are dying to take root and we can’t wait to get the beds built and ready.
Also in the works (but not by our doing):
An old apple tree that is half dead.
Apparently, it still produces, so we’ll see how good the apples are later this year! If they’re good, you can bet I’ll be trying my hand at canning my own apple butter and apple pie filling this year.
Two fig bushes. I had no idea figs could grow here – I’m excited to see them in bloom.
Once we get the beds built, we also plan to do a regular garden space of just tilled land for other things like tomatoes, zucchini, squash, corn, peppers, etc. And we’ll planting our favorite herbs: parsley, cilantro, basil, etc. I’m excited!
I’m really excited about having a larger garden this year. It will definitely be different than what we had at our old house. And that makes me both happy and a little nervous – I know that having a larger garden means more time in the garden weeding, harvesting, preparing, canning, etc. I think it will be a fun adventure, but I’m definitely heading into unknown territory ; )

Every spring my Dad and I plant a vegetable garden with zucchini, tomatoes, cucumbers, and bell peppers. It’s so nice to have access to so many fresh veggies in the summertime! :-D
I’m so jealous of your garden :( I live in an apartment with a shared yard that I can’t plant in but I am so excited for the day I can plant a garden. I love fresh vegetables right off the vine!
You can definitely plant smaller things! Herbs do really good in pots that you could have in windowsills or in the shared yard, and some strawberries and tomatoes do good in pots, too! Even just having a few things growing is fun :)
I love your garden! I so wish I had more space to plant things… I always grow lots of herbs, strawberries, lettuce, tomatoes, and peppers.

It’ll be so much fun! The garden we always do at home is normally half acre ++ One year we had a 3 lb tomato! and an 11 lb head of cabbage! we always make things like sauerkraut, canned tomatoes, beets, green beans, etc. It’s work! but It’s a lot of fun! I wish I could grow something here, but there’s just something about going from a big farm to having a “garden” in an apartment that is just no fun!

Aww, this makes me want to start my garden again. I don’t think I’ll be able to get one in this year but definitely next year!
I’m so jealous of your yard! Given that I’m more of an urban dweller I know my growing options are limited but the idea of having fruit trees sounds amazing to me.
No garden this year. I will have to live vicariously through you. :-)
Andy and I still live in an apartment so no garden for us. This is one of my dreams. I really want to grow a garden when we buy a house! I will live vicariously through you too.
yayyy! Strawberries sound amazing! And that is so cool that you have an apple tree. We planted cantaloupe, watermelon, green beans, summer squash, jalapenos and tomatoes. The beans are sprouting like crazy. I’m hoping the fruit really turns out too! Thanks for sharing and I can’t wait for the updates :)

What an amazing garden you are going to have! I had no idea figs could grow in VA either?! I can’t wait to see all the amazing dishes you make with your garden goodies :) I’ll be growing herbs again this year plus some jalapenos if all goes well. Love the warmer weather!
Looks great! I can’t wait to have my own house and garden – the 2nd floor covered balcony isn’t ideal for growing my own food. Will have to stick with the CSA share until I can have a beautiful garden like yours!
