Monday Song

After seeing them perform on the Grammy’s, my love for The Avett Brothers has grown even stronger. They are incredibly talented and their music is honest and reminds me of what music should be. It’s made to share and speak to your soul.

Nick and I have even been trying to play some of their songs at home, which has been fun. I had my parents bring me my keyboard from back home and we’ve been picking out some songs at night after work: Nick on his guitar, me on the keyboard.

And while we have almost every cd and I love every song, this is one of my favorites and it has been since I first heard it.

If you haven’t heard The Avett Brothers yet, I hope you enjoy it. And if you ever get a chance to see them live – take it. They put on the best concerts I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been to quite a few.

Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise

There’s a darkness upon me that’s flooded in light
In the fine print they tell me what’s wrong and what’s right
And it comes in black and it comes in white
And I’m frightened by those that don’t see it

When nothing is owed or deserved or expected
And your life doesn’t change by the man that’s elected
If you’re loved by someone, you’re never rejected
Decide what to be and go be it

There was a dream and one day I could see it
Like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded that somebody free it
And there was a kid with a head full of doubt
So I’ll scream til I die and the last of those bad thoughts are finally out

There’s a darkness upon you that’s flooded in light
And in the fine print they tell you what’s wrong and what’s right
And it flies by day and it flies by night
And I’m frightened by those that don’t see it

There was a dream and one day I could see it
Like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded that somebody free it
And there was a kid with a head full of doubt
So I’ll scream til I die and the last of those bad thoughts are finally out

There was a dream and one day I could see it
Like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded that somebody free it
And there was a kid with a head full of doubt
So I’ll scream til I die and the last of those bad thoughts are finally out

There’s a darkness upon me that’s flooded in light
In the fine print they tell me what’s wrong and what’s right
There’s a darkness upon me that’s flooded in light
And I’m frightened by those that don’t see it

Happy Monday!

  1. Brandi, this is definitely one of my favorite songs! I listen to it on repeat all.the.time! There’s just something about it that gives me hope – when I hear it, I just feel like everything is the way it is supposed to be. Cheesy, I know – but this is the first song that really gets to me like that!

  2. I also really like this song. I love their harmonies and the melodies of the songs. Their performance with Mumford and Sons was great. While I love Dillion’s writing, I could live without ever hearing him sing again. Have a good week.

  3. Thanks, Brandi – it was great seeing this again. I remembered reading a post where you said you liked the Avett Brothers awhilie back, so I made sure to catch them and Mumford and Sons on the Grammys. What a great performance by both groups! I’ll defintely be picking up some of their songs in the near future!
