Two New Pizza Pies

Saturday in our house was homemade pizza day!

We had 3 great reasons:

We were finally home after two weekends of being out of town.

Football was on…all day long :)

Homemade pizza is one of the best things to make!

I mixed up my usual pizza dough recipe, but did two new topping ideas.

I found a few new ideas on Food & Wine and decided we needed to try something other than pepperoni.

The Mexican Pizza turned out great!

I made mine a little differently than the recipe says, but I loved the flavors! The tomato sauce was just a mixture of canned crushed tomatoes, garlic, ancho chile powder, and cumin. Then I topped the pizza with:

  • pinto beans
  • orange, yellow, and red peppers
  • red onion
  • black olives
  • Monterey Jack cheese
  • fresh cilantro

We also didn’t do the lettuce on top to serve because we had salads on the side.

Mexican flavors + pizza = a winner!

My other pizza tasted great, but I need to work on it a little bit.

I used this Hummus Pizza with Arugula and Feta as the inspiration, and of course, made some changes.

Apparently, arugula is not popular here – I can never find it.

So I just used what I had!

For the sauce, I mixed canned crushed tomatoes with salt, pepper, garlic, and smoked paprika (because we love it on hummus!).

Then I topped the pizza with Sabra hummus, red onion, peppers, black olives, a few diced tomatoes from our garden, and feta.

The flavors? Delicious!

But between the sauce, hummus, and diced tomatoes, there was a little too much liquid and the crust didn’t completely bake in the center.

We still ate it :)

  1. I really think Iowa Girl Eats Thai Tofu pizza is ingenious! I also really like egg on my pizza.

  2. MM I really need to start making my own pizza dough. One of my favorite non-traditional pizza toppings is the one I tried recently: sweet potatoes. Seriously delicious!

  3. Buffalo chicken pizza!
Ziti pizza is really good too!

  4. ooh, those look great, and now i think i should make some pizza! eggs on pizza are fun, as is roasted squash :)

  5. I love figs on pizza, with cheese.
Oh and making some kind of avocado/bean puree, and then topping that with veggies.yum.

  6. My favorite non-traditional pizza topping is mashed potatoes! There’s a restaurant called Bar in New Haven, CT, that makes it, and it is amazing. My friends and I like to get it with red sauce (but it’s traditionally served without sauce), and then there are plops of mashed potatoes, cheese, and bacon. Love it!

I love your nontraditional pizza idea. And I’m sorry you can’t find arugula there.

  7. My favorite pizza is Mac and Cheese pizza from a chain pizza shop where I live called Peace A Pizza. It’s delicious! Although the Mexican pizza you made looks REALLY good too! I love Mexican food so I’m sure Mexican pizza would be amazing! :)

  8. It’s not really non-traditional, but right now I can’t get enough bbq chicken pizza with bbq sauce instead of tomato.

  9. Homemade pizza is the best hands down–I love how colorful your Mexican pizza turned out!

  10. I tried your pizza crust and out of all (and there’s quite a few) the recipes for whole wheat crust I have tried. Yours is a definite winner! It was just the right amount of chewy and had the air bubbles in it after being cooked that I always go for! Thanks for sharing this awesome recipe! ~Dawn
