Peachy

Who else is excited for fresh peaches?

IMG_0078

I am so happy that they’re starting to show up at road side stands and farmer’s markets again. We ate so many of them last summer, and I’ve been waiting patiently for them to begin trickling in.

I don’t think anything beats a perfectly ripe peach.

Two summers ago, Nick and I were visiting the farmer’s market in downtown Roanoke and this cute old farmer ripped a white peach in half and gave it to us to sample. They were from his farm, picked that very morning for the market, and he was extremely proud of his peaches. He stood in front of us in his dark denim overalls and white tshirt, watching us and waiting for our reaction.

That peach – that perfect white peach – was the epitome of summer. Fresh. Light. Nick and I both had peach juice dripping down our chins and onto our shirts, but we didn’t care. My hands were sticky for the rest of the afternoon, but the only thing I could think about was eating another one. So we bought an entire basket from him. And every single peach in that basket was just as good.

The peaches I have this week aren’t like those white peaches, but they’re almost as good.

I made some overnight oats last night to pair with my peach this morning.

  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • cinnamon
  • chia seeds
  • pinch of salt (makes the dish! – don’t skip it)

This morning, I added some of my new favorite things:

Cool and refreshing, and it tastes like summer.

What foods taste like summer to you?

Fresh veggies… especially corn on the cob. We had a huge garden back home and I’m pretty sure 2/3 of our lunch or dinner would consist of food straight from it…

mmm – looks perfect. and i don’t think i’ve ever had a white peach before! i love fresh peaches, too – but nectarines even more. i’m not a fan of peach skin being fuzzy :P
fresh fruit also screams summer to me – especially strawberries that we’ve just picked ourselves. the sad part is when they’re all gone :( and, as amy said – corn on the cob! and grilling. oh, i’d better stop now, haha.

I love all summer produce but I loved fresh picked strawberries. I’m taking my kids picking this week and we’ll come home with several quarts. They’ll be gone in a flash…most times we don’t even get a chance to rinse them!

Watermelon. On a hot day, it’s all I want. Although I won’t turn down any of the summer produce and blueberries are my favorite. I’ve got a peach/blueberry cobbler that is excellent. Oh summer…

coconut + peach oats are my second fave combo next to pb + banana!!!

as for foods that taste like summer to me – it would have to be a fresh, ripe, peak-season tomato!!!

p.s. i just caught up on like 7 posts – the fact you got sister act for your birthday makes me oh so happy. that movie – esp the 2nd one – is one of my fave things to sing along to!

My boyfriend and I can go through 4-5 pounds of local, organic stone fruit a week! We go to the Farmers Market every Sunday and buy peaches (my favorite!), pluots, plums, nectarines, and apricots. I love summer fruit so much!

I adore peaches! ripe, juicy, sweet. Perfect summer fruit. And they go so well with hot oats.
watermelon, cantaloupe and figs are also my favorite, figs being my obsession because they are not very abundant :(

Peaches are my summer. I would love to visit my dad in South Carolina because they live right over the border and I could have as many Georgia peaches as I wanted.

My friend actually lives down there and is bringing me some up for 4th of July!

I went to the market yesterday and had the produce guy let me taste all of the different peaches and nectarines they had. There were six or seven varieties and none of them were sweet! That’s really weird, because two weeks ago, I had the most incredible white peaches. I sure hope they get better tasting ones again soon. I LOVE peaches and nectarines! And I can’t imagine a better pairing than with oats, granola, and So Delicious coconut milk kefir. Your photos are making me drool right now.

I love peaches, but I guess I’m kind of weird because I don’t like them once they get soft and juicy. I like them hard and crunchy like apples. The taste definitely makes me think summer!

Mmmm, fresh peaches are so summery! I will never buy a peach out of season. Honestly, it just tastes nothing like a ripe seasonal peach so why in the world would you even kid yourself!

I had an entire peach with breakfast today too. So refreshing!

Oh peaches are the EPITOME of summer for me. I work at a local farm that is FAMOUS for their peaches and omg… I live off of white peaches in the summer. If you ever come across a peach called China Pearl, snatch it up! They are the best white peaches, hands down.
