Nutella Marbled Banana Bread

IMG_9254

I’m not sure why it took me so long to put Nutella in banana bread, but I hope you’ll try it soon.

Somehow, this latest jar of Nutella had escaped my reach – until last weekend. This may be my new favorite way to use it.

Nutella Marbled Banana Bread

  • 1/4 cup applesauce
  • 2 Tbsp canola oil
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 4 ripe bananas, mashed
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup toasted, chopped hazelnuts
  • 4 Tbsp Nutella or other chocolate-hazelnut spread
  1. Preheat oven to 350 and grease bottom of loaf pan.
  2. Mix sugar, applesauce, and oil in large bowl. Stir in eggs until blended.
  3. Add bananas, buttermilk/milk, and vanilla to applesauce mixture.
  4. Stir in flour, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Fold in hazelnuts.
  6. Pour batter into loaf pan and drop spoonfuls of Nutella on the top. Swirl around with the end of a knife.
  7. Bake about 1 hour or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Even though I added the Nutella to the top of the loaf, some of it sunk into the batter, leaving a chocolate filling in the center of the bread

I love the crunchy of the hazelnuts with the swirly, melty ribbons of Nutella.

This is great for breakfast and even better as a dessert with just a little more Nutella spread on top.

Can you even have too much Nutella? I don’t think so.

Are you a banana bread purist or do you like adding fun new ingredients?

That sounds unreal. I love plain banana bread, but a few chocolate chips or peanut butter and I’m a happy girl. :)

I’m usually a plain banana bread girl, but that big chunk of nutella in the middle looks too good to pass up!

That is beautiful! When I make banana bread it doesn’t even last a few days because we eat it so quickly. If I made something like your banana bread it’d probably be gone in less than 24 hours. Sounds delicious!

my mom is a purist, but i love adding all sorts of combos of things that i might to a regular bread:dark chocolate chips, white chocolate and raspberries, milk chocolate and blueberries, dried cranberries/raisins/cherries/apples, peanut butter, nuts, etc. makes it so much more fun!

Can you believe I’ve never actually tried Nutella?! But by the looks/sounds of it, I bet it would be a fabulous addition to bread. I am always adding new things to banana bread..you don’t know if you don’t try!

That’s a great idea Brandi! I have bananas I need to use up AND nutella – yum!

I like adding walnuts to my bread, but the rest of the family likes it just plain. :D

    That looks heavenly.

While I am very open to add-ins in banana bread when baking it myself, I am a purist. I love a dense and moist banana-y bread.

There was a pot luck at my school recently and a former caterer had brought in her version of Banana Bread . So good. It had peanut butter chips AND chocolate chips.

Would walnuts work to replace the hazelnuts?

      Yes, definitely!
