‘Sketti and Peas

Sometimes, dinner plans just go out the window.

After a long day of work, all I wanted was something fast and comforting. The original plan was a meal that we both love, but it would have taken over an hour to get it assembled and wait for it to bake.

Since Maggie was home with me today, Nick and I decided to go for a run once he got home. By the time we got back and showered, it was already ten after 7, so I changed the menu.

One of the most comforting meals in my recipe box is my mom’s spaghetti sauce.

Even though I have the recipe, mine never tastes like hers. I’ve followed the recipe word for word but it’s never the same.

I can get it close enough, but I know there’s a difference.

While it doesn’t taste like it does at home, it’s a quick and delicious option for dinner.

And I always have to have peas with spaghetti. My mom always served peas with spaghetti. I don’t know why, but it’s tradition now.

All in all, I’d say this change of plans worked out perfectly tonight.

Do you have any family food traditions (serving certain veggies with dishes, making one meal a certain way that no one else does)?

  1. Yep, this happens to me from time to time. I sometimes get a little too “planned” with our dinners and forget to factor in that my mood, appetite, and cravings may change from day to day, so it’s probably not practical to plan out the meals weeks in advance.

Glad you had a great go-to recipe to make for a night like this. Mom’s recipes are always the best!

    Have a wonderful night love!

  2. I have a few things of my Mom’s that I make and they never quite taste the same as when my Mom makes them…how is it?

As for pairings, we always have blueberry muffins with homemade macaroni and cheese. Weird huh?

Glad you had such a nice weekend. I watched Julie & Julia last night and couldn’t help but think of you.

  3. YUM – that pasta dish looked divine!
My family does have a few traditions – my grandmother makes a dish called Strogonoff once in a while. We all love it :)
Oh, and Cod on Good Friday, before Easter! And a Chicken Tender at Chistmas. Oh, well… Haha.
    Have a great night, girl!

  4. We always had carrots with pizza as a kid! And drank apple juice!

  5. Yum, that dinner looks great. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is that my family eats their eggs with rice instead of grits!

  6. My mom makes the BEST spaghetti too and I can never get mine to taste like hers. I don’t know what it is but there are just some things moms make better.

  7. My mother’s mother makes the best beef stew. I’ve tried to make it but it never comes out the same so as much as I love it, I really don’t even attempt it. Silly but true.

  8. haha we always made spaghetti with peas on the side too! or green beans. Always!

  9. We always had green beans with spaghetti. And mac and cheese always had peas mixed in.
