Double the Dishes

Did you know I use 2 bowls every time I make oatmeal?

I almost always cook my oatmeal in the microwave, but after cooking and stirring in my cinnamon and other mix-ins, that bowl doesn’t look very good.

Streaks of oatmeal and clumps of cinnamon on the sides of the bowl don’t make for good pictures.

So I have a whole process for oatmeal making:

  • Cook oatmeal in microwave
  • Take out and add in cinnamon (and any other mix-ins that day)
  • Transfer to clean bowl
  • Add toppings
  • Take pictures
  • Eat!

There’s no way I could cook the oatmeal in this bowl and still have it look this good ;)

Today’s mix was:

  • 1/2 cup oatmeal, 1 cup water, pinch salt
  • cinnamon
  • 1/2 banana, sliced
  • 1 Tbsp Just 4 Nuts Butter
  • last of the TJs omega trek mix (about 1 Tbsp?)

It may be weird that I do this, but I’d rather get a better picture than have to look at a messy bowl in each shot!

And we don’t have a dishwasher, so I know I’m just creating more work for myself…but I don’t mind it.

Off to work! Today’s going to be busy.

  1. It’s worth the effort – the end result looks so pretty!!

  2. I do oats on the stovetop and end up using a ton of dshes – pots, measuring cups, plates/cutting boards to cut things up – I’m a mess!

  3. I once tried making oatmeal using the microwave and I failed miserably… I always use the stove now! :)

  4. I use 2 bowls too!! I started doing it since my bowl’s always a mess, but I actually think it makes it easy to clean, even though it’s too bowls- there’s less time for the oatmeal that goes up the side of the bowl to dry and get stuck ;)

  5. I do the same thing. And when I am writing recipes, I even use clean cutting boards as display instead of the ones I actually used. The things we do for the love of the blog.

  6. Glad to see I’m not the only one who transfers a dish to make it look prettier. I sometimes even do that when I’m making breakfast for my family just to make things look nice!

  7. Haha I love that you shared a little bit of the “behind the scenes.” Now we know your secret. ;)

  8. this was my BIGGEST gripe with microwave oatmeal was that the bowl did not look pretty! that’s why i have converted to stovetop oats, and i am never going back!

happy day to you lady :)

  9. shit

p.s. i dont know why that came up as holly natalie chris and donna…please excuse that :)

  10. i spy my favorite bowl! I also enjoy my breakfast in a polka dot pampered chef bowl!

  11. I’ve totally started doing that when I know I’m takings pics of breakfast… ha! I was always, “why don’t mine ever look as perfect?”

  12. When I took pictures of my breakfast in the past I’ve done the same thing. I love the ease of microwave oats but not the icky look of the bowl.

  13. How ironic, I blogged today about my ridiculous talent for using as many unnecessary dishes and utensils as I can each time I cook. You might be up there with me! But it’s worth it for good blogging :)

  14. LOL That’s one of those things that falls under “Only a food blogger…”. I have to say, your food pictures always look outstanding!

  15. I really admire your oatmeal beautification process.. I just snap pics straight out of the microwave. Patience is a virtue that I lack, especially when it comes to food :)

  16. And your pictures are so beautiful as a result! That’s blog-love, right there.

  17. I never thought about that! I cook my oats on the stove, but I hate when I heat up soup and the bowl looks gross.

  18. I have to say that oatmeal does look pretty :-)

  19. I’m surprised you use a microwave…I keep reading how microwaving food kills the nutritional value. Here’s an article about it: http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_6463.cfm

Anyway, love your blog and your recipes!!! This version of oatmeal looks wonderful…must try!

  20. haha.. i get so much crap for this. i always use multiple dishes! gotta have a nice presentation, right?!

  21. Haha, I’ve thought about doing that, but I can’t bring myself to! I just wipe down the sides and hope it looks good enough.
