Bad Scents, Great Dinner

Dear Mexican Restaurants,

Is it possible for me to eat lunch and not walk around smelling like one giant tortilla chip for the rest of the day?

My lunch was awesome, but sitting in my office for the next 4 hours was not. You know it’s bad when you can smell it (even though no one else can) and you’re getting grossed out.

Gracias,

Brandi

Don’t you hate that? Mexican Restaurants + Subway always do that to me! You can go in there for 5 minutes and smell like those places for the rest of the day. Good during lunch, but not so much after. Blech. I’m surprised I’m still in my clothes and not pajamas!

Dinner was great!

I love buffalo.

Especially local buffalo. This one isn’t from a town near us, but it is from Virginia.

I made a “ buffalo helper” type of dish.

Buffalo Chili Mac

  • 1 lb. ground buffalo
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cans kidney beans (rinsed and drained)
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes
  • 3-4 cups water/broth
  • 2 cups small pasta (I used shells, but macaroni would be great, too)
  • 1/2 cup lima beans
  • 1 cup corn
  • 1 Tbsp ancho chile powder
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp coriander
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp hot sauce
  • salt, pepper
  1. Saute the onion in olive oil until softened.
  2. Add in buffalo and garlic and brown the meat.
  3. Stir in beans, tomatoes, spices, and water/broth; bring to a boil.
  4. Add in pasta, reduce the heat to medium and let simmer until pasta is cooked.
  5. Stir in beans and corn.
  6. Serve!

I had my chili mac with a side of broccoli for a little more green with dinner. And I love adding corn to chili-type dishes – that little bit of sweetness is so good with the spice.

Off to play with Maggie! She’s pouting :)

  1. Virginian buffalo sounds like an awesome dinner! It’s so cheap, too, when you get just the ground beef. And then you really can do anything with it

  2. Haha you’re so right! Mexican restaurants certainly have a odor that stays around for a while. Sometimes Chinese restaurants are like that too. I feel like I smell like a dumpling all day :)

  3. Haha this is soooo true!!! I always smell like bread when I come of out Subway. And Wegmans!!! I hate that.

Oh well, at least it was tasty. :)

  4. bahaha to the smell. there’s one dining hall on campus that does that too so i have “chase clothes” that i wear there because i don’t want to smell up all my clothes!

  5. I swear, Mexican food just absorbs in to your skin!! Hope Maggie doesn’t try to take a nibble out of you tonight ;)

  6. Haha I totally agree with your observation about Mexican restaurants and Subway – what is up with that?!

This buffalo dish looks fantastic, I have really been meaning to try buffalo (had it once in spaghetti, so good) – thanks for the reminder! Glad you are having a better day today :)

  7. The beginning of your post totally made me laugh…I know exactly what you mean!

  8. What’s even worse is when I put the mexican doggie bag in your car. After a 10 minute ride home, my car smells absolutely disgusting!

  9. “in my car…”

I hate that you can’t delete your comments and start over. :-(

  10. I totally agree with you about the scents of restaurants – Japanese steak houses are like that as well!

    Maggie is too darn cute!

PS Are you going to fitbloggin?

  11. How funny! I always HATE when i have to walk around smelling like corn all day… but hey, my dog’s paws smell like corn and i don’t mind :)

  12. Haha!!! That is SO true!!! I hate when you smell like food. Blech.

  13. SO true! I think Indian restaurants always make me smell funky. One of my bff’s at Tech hated West End because she thought it made her smell bad! Personally I hated D2 because it made me feel sick…all that nasty grease.

  14. I’d rather smell like Mexican restaurant or Subway than burnt popcorn! My co-worker burnt it (smoke pouring out of the microwave) so bad the other day that I walked down to our cafeteria and couldn’t figure out why I still smelled burnt popcorn…. it was in my clothes & hair. I almost took a shower and washed my hair before I started working out at the gym, that’s how bad it was. :)

  15. I hate when the smell of a restaurant sticks with you, it’s the worst. There’s a coffee shop near my work (which is CRUCIAL on mornings when I’m in a rush) and you just reek of it after you leave. Ick.

  16. Great dinner!

And Maggie is soooo cute, as always! :)

  17. it’s true – and why is subway SO POTENT?!?!

  18. Ha! That is so true about the smells!!! Back in high school I used to work at a Mexican restaurant and I had to shampoo twice after work just to get the smell out of my hair =(

  19. Yeah Mexican restaurants are bad but Indian and Ethiopian restaurants are the WORST! They use so many unique and yummy spices which is great for the food, but your clothing REAKS afterwards.
