Flu in the News

by admin on October 7, 2009

I’m happy to say my head isn’t throbbing like it was yesterday, but my headache is still there.

I’m hoping a good night of sleep, a good breakfast, and some coffee will help  :)

I know I have a lot of my carrot cake oatmeal in the fridge, but I also had 3 bananas that HAD to be used. I put one in my oatmeal this morning and 2 in the fridge until I decide what to do with them.

Today’s bowl was:

  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1 cup water
  • pinch salt
  • 1/2 super ripe banana
  • cinnamon
  • 3 Tbsp TJs nuts over raspberries trail mix (some mixed in, chocolate saved for top!)

All I’ve been hearing on the news lately has to do with the flu, the flu vaccine, whether it’s safe, etc.

What do you think? Are you going to get the vaccine? Do you normally get a flu shot?

I’ve actually never had a flu shot – ever. I don’t know if we’ll end up and get the vaccine or not.

Hmm, I don’t think I will. I honestly don’t think it’s necessary for me. My brother did get the flu shot this year though. He got a little sick for a couple of days after but that’s normal. He’s just fine now.

I’m glad you’re feeling a little bit better. :)

My mom keeps telling me not to get the swine flu vaccine… I don’t know much about it but I guess it hasn’t been fully tested yet so I don’t know…?? I will prob do some more research before I decide, that is if they are even available to us soon. The past few years I have gotten a flu shot, mainly bc we get them for free at work so why not. Feel better! :)

I hope you feel better soon! Your breakfast looks yummy!

I’ve only gotten the flu shot once and it was when I was younger. I’m pretty sure I had the flu last week when I was sick (or something very close to it). I don’t know if I’ll get the vaccine because I honestly think the media is just trying to freak people out about the swine flu.

I hope you get to feeling better soon!! If you feel like you have the tiniest flu symptoms you should go to the doctor though, my brother had the swine flu last week and it came soo fast, in a few hours.

Your trail mix oats always look delicious! I think I may have to try some ;)

Glad to hear your head is better!! I know too well how it is after a migraine, I always have headache the day after but that’s nothing compared to the day before!! Get better soon!! Hug!
About the vaccine… I’m definitely NOT getting the shot! I never had a flu shot so why bother with this one?!
But everyone has to decide on there own!! Have a good day!! Hug n.

I am glad you are feeling better.

I never get a flu shot despite everyone telling me I should.

Sorry about your migraine. :-( I’ve only had a few in my life, but that was plenty for me! It just takes so much out of you.

I’ve only had the flu shot once. And I got sick afterwards. I guess I figure I didn’t ever get one as a kid (they didn’t have them, or at least push them, way back then!);-) so why start now? And then there is all the controversy with shots….it’s just scary stuff!

Glad to hear you are feeling better!
I’m really unsure about getting the flu shot, I still can’t decide. I haven’t gotten it in awhile, but all of the news has so sensationalized it, that I am almost scared not to! It always makes me so sick :(

I go back and forth with flu shots. While I’m not immunocompromised, when I get sick, it has the potential to turn into a lingering and stubborn bronchitis because I’m susceptible to asthma when I’m sick (I normally only have allergic asthma in the spring time) anyways, clearly my respiratory system is f’d. My parents always push me to get the flu shot because of those reasons above. I dont think I got the shot last year, but I think I got it the year before.

I’m not crazy about whats IN the vaccinations…..but this season is looking like it will be a LONG and hard flu season. I will NOT get the swine flu vaccine (because it hasn’t been in testing long enough). but I AM seriously considering the regular flu vaccination. Esp since this year I got a part-time babysitting job and the kids have been sick already this season.

still doing the internal debate with myself. i work for attorneys who deal with clinical trials, etc and my boss even stated that its going to be a LONG hard flu season….especially since our part-time INTERN came down with SWINE FLU!!! thankfully he didn’t infect any of us, but still scary – its going around his law school campus I think.

So while I normally wouldn’t get the flu shot…I am thinking about getting it this year for all those reasons I stated above!

Outstanding looking oatmeal. I wish I was eating it right now.

I have also never gotten a flu sot, but never had the flu. So – I don’t really see the point. Hope you feel better soon!

yay for a happy not hurting head! :) Those oats look amazing and i really could use some right about now!

I’ve never gotten the flu shot and i don’t plan on it. I for some reason don’t really believe in it, if you get the flu you get the flu.

If you need something to do with those bananas, try this recipe! It’s my very favorite. I always underbake it so it’s all gooey and good on the inside :)

I’ve gotten the regular flu shot once… it didn’t seem to help or hurt. I don’t think I’ll get one (either kind) this year

I never got the flu shot until the first year I became a teacher. I got two different verisions of the flu that year. It was horrible! Since there’s so much controversy, and we don’t know if the shot represents the strain out that year, I dont’t think it’s worth it. THere’s a lot of not-good-for-your-body stuff in there in addition to the immunization part.

Plus, most people with H1N1 have reported it being mostly like a normal flu.

Ooh choc chips in oatmeal … yum! I have never had a flu shot and I don’t plan to start now. I never get sick (knock on wood), I just hope for the best.

I normally get the regular flu shot because I work with the public alot and many of our clients get the flu. I have to talk to my doc about the swine flu one since there are reported cases in our area.

Sorry you still aren’t 100%. Hopefully some rest will help.

I’ve never gotten the vaccine and don’t plan to. I don’t think it’s unsafe, but I also am not convinced how much more effective it is than proper eating and sleeping

I don’t plan to get the vaccine. I hope my good nutrition and exercise will make my immunity strong enough. Although, I did catch a cold or something, so now I’m sick :)

I stumbled upon your blog through a link on the Healthy Everythingtarian blog about puppy chow made with Almond butter and dark chocolate. I can’t seem to find that recipe on your blog. Also saw your cute pup with the Hokie scarf and wondered if you lived close to Roanoke/Blacksburg?

No flu shot for me. Never had one, and I have never had the flu either. I seem to have a very strong immune system. Eating right goes a long way toward warding off bugs. My whole family (3 kids + husband) can all have colds and I don’t get one….I think it’s been about 3 or 4 years since I’ve had a cold. Now migraines….those I get. YUCK. Hope you will be OK today.

I get the flu shot every year and have never had the flu, I truly believe in it. The H1N1 I don’t believe in though!
Hope you feel better and great oats to start the day!

Even when you’re feeling sick, your food still looks beautiful and is healthy. Go Brandi! And you managed to get up some great posts. I applaud you! I don’t know what I’m going to do about the flu. I’ve never had the shot before either and I’m confused as to whether now is a good time. I hope you feel better soon. BTW, love the Q&A – I really enjoy learning more about my blogger friends :)

I am torn on whether or not to get the swine flue vaccine. There’s so much hysteria over the swine flu that it’s making me think that I should get it. On the other hand, I haven’t had the regular flu shot since I was a child and only caught the flu once since then. A lot of people have gotten it at school already, so maybe I should get it just to be safe.

I hope you are feeling better now! (Your oatmeal looks delicious by the way)

I got the flu shot a few weeks ago. I work with students who almost primarily come from low socio-economic homes, which basically means they are rarely healthy. I come into contact with so many people a day. I got a really bad flu my last year at Harding, and since then I’ve been getting the flu shot and haven’t had it again.
