Opening Race Day 2009

While it’s definitely not the start of the actual race season here, today is our first race since this time last year.

I actually don’t think Virginia has a “race season”. Since it never gets horribly hot, there are races all year ‘round.

I started off today with a simple and filling breakfast. I decided to stick with some basics that should sit well in my stomach. Because the race didn’t start until 10, we had plenty of time to get up, eat, and digest some before heading over.

I made some oatmeal with some cinnamon, a sliced banana, and some walnuts.

Definitely a good breakfast. This filled me up but didn’t sit like a rock in my stomach, either.

This 5K wasn’t the exact same race I ran last year, BUT this is on the same route as my very first 5K that I ran in April of last year.

My first race ever, the 5K last April, I finished in 33:11. It’s a very hilly course – actually, it’s a course the cross country team runs on – and is about 2.5 miles of grassy, rolling hills, and just a bit of pavement at the very beginning and end of the course.

I knew I would beat my first time from last year on this course, but really wasn’t sure if I would actually beat my last PR just because the course is so tough.

I was actually feeling really good for most of the run, but the people running the race were fast! Too fast for me. I looked down right after we started and I was running at an 8 minute pace and was still being passed! I am just not that fast.

I tried to not think about that and just find a good pace for me.

I ended up finishing at 29:46, so I definitely knocked off about 3.5 minutes from the last time! I didn’t beat my last 5K time, but it was pretty close.

Plus – I don’t know how accurate the course or my HRM/foot pod is, but once I finished, my HRM said that I had gone 3.31 miles instead of the 3.1 – oh well.

Either way, it was a good race.

Nick and I came home, showered, and then took Harley for a walk around a little festival that’s going on in town today.

He’s got his Hokie gear on!  :)

There wasn’t much at the festival, but there were some cool cars out there.

After walking around for a little while, we came home to watch/listen to football and eat some lunch.

I probably had the most random after-a-race meal ever!

All I wanted was some eggs, so I just grabbed the easiest veggies in the fridge and made a quick lunch.

I had a little butternut squash/onion mixture left, so I heated that up with some kale in a pan until the kale was wilted and everything was hot.

While that was cooking, I cooked some grits in the microwave. After the kale was ready, I took the veggies out of the pan and then cooked the eggs.

Quick. Easy. Good.

Now I’m watching football and probably going to start some laundry.

Your oats look soooo thick. Do you add anything like a little brown sugar to make them that way?

  10. What a good little leftover meal! I love it when things come together like that. :-)

  11. Oh, to have a race start at 10 would be great, but it’s still hot here and we have to start them early.
Congrats on the 5K – that’s a great time and I would love to run a sub-30 minute race.

  12. I like doing different 5K’s but I love repeating the same courses/races because they give me a more accurate idea of how my time as improved. Otherwise I would think I improved by 15 minutes in one week this season from a super hilly hot race to a flat cool race.

    BTW Congrats!

  13. Way to go shaving time off! You rock! Sounds like you had a great Saturday!

  14. Great job on the race!

I love all the pictures of the cars…
