I am so excited about doing a heart health series, and I really wanted to start out with something fun.
Heart disease is such a scary and serious thing, but I also want this series to be something that people enjoy. I’ve picked a few topics I want to talk about, but the first part is all fashion :)
The Heart Truth (a national awareness campaign for women about heart disease) has started putting on a yearly fashion show, called the Heart Truth Red Dress Collection.
This February, The Heart Truth gives women everywhere an early Valentine with the debut of the 2009 Red Dress Collection. This collection’s debut is an inspiring event that celebrates the Red Dress as the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness. On Friday, February 13, The Heart Truth takes this important issue to heart, bringing more than 20 of today’s hottest celebrities together on the runway in fashions created by America’s top designers for women’s heart health.
The Heart Truth created and introduced the Red Dress as the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness in 2002 to deliver an urgent wake-up call to American women. The Red Dress reminds women of the need to protect their heart health and inspires them to take action. Each February since its launch, the Red Dress symbol has come to life the runway with the support of the fashion industry and celebrity models at the Red Dress Collection Fashion Show.
I found a lot of pictures from this and it looks like such a great idea! I love that they are bringing awareness to this disease in such a fun way.
I couldn’t post all the pictures, but I did want to post some of my favorite red dresses.
Ana Ortiz
Hilary Duff
Jenna Fischer (aka Pam!)
Jennie Garth
Maria Menounos (who has shared her personal weight loss story, as well)
Molly Sims
If you want to see all the dresses and celebrities that participated, I found a slideshow that has most of it.
Some interesting stats:
- Heart disease includes a number of problems affecting the heart and the blood vessels in the heart
- Coronary heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States
- Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States
- Prevention is important: two-thirds of women who have a heart attack fail to make a full recovery
- Cardiovascular disease is the leading killer of women over age 25. It kills nearly twice as many women in the United States than all types of cancer, including breast cancer
- Only 13 percent of women think heart disease is a threat to their health.
- Both men and women have heart attacks, but more women who have heart attacks die from them
This is obviously something dear to my heart (no pun intended), and we can see why! Heart disease affects so many people in the US – it’s important that we know about it, including what to look for and what we can do to prevent heart disease.
Here’s to heart health! Stay tuned for the next installment!
